Victoria’s building regulator changes: contractor checks
Older building documents may refer to the VBA. Use current Victorian regulator information when checking the credentials relevant to your demolition project.
Regulator transition: BPC established 1 July 2025
Planning Victoria records that the Building and Plumbing Commission brought together VBA, domestic dispute-resolution and domestic building insurance functions from 1 July 2025. This regulator change is a reason to check current official information; it does not itself prove that a contractor holds the credentials needed for your work.
What this means for your project
Ask the proposed contractor for the legal contracting name and the registration, licence and insurance details relevant to the actual scope. Check those details with the responsible authority, and resolve differences between a marketing name and the entity in the agreement. For Exccell enquiries, request applicable credential evidence with the quote; this guide does not publish unprovided licence numbers. We recommend keeping the verification record alongside the agreed scope rather than relying on a logo or an old screenshot.
Questions before you commit
- Does the contracting entity match the evidence supplied?
- Which credentials apply to demolition and any specialist hazardous-material work?
- Have you checked current status and retained the written scope and insurance evidence?
Bring these questions to your appointed project team. Exccell can discuss the demolition boundary and inspection scope; the responsible professionals must confirm the design, approvals and specialist work for your address.
